Everywhere you go, you're surrounded by words. It's now so common that we see words as signs -- "Stop" -- that they become mere symbols to us, and yet they do more, just as the O2 on Arsenal's jerseys represent mobile phones as well as lavish sums of cash. Fionna Banner's known for her book on Vietnam, not fiction but art: Nam describes the entire contents of Coppola's Apocalypse Now. And she's done more, wall texts in her words, "wordscapes" of Dylan's infamous documentary Don't Look Back
and Lawrence of Arabia -- phew! the Merseysider loves her epics. Words and graphics are her brushstokes, text her imagery; more importantly it's a rearrangement of our so-visual culture and a highlighting of things we take for granted. To date she's been commissioned to do a piece in London's new City Hall, it's no wonder that she's up for the Turner Prize this year. (show ends Saturday 25.10)
NB: Private View is Wednesday 18.10 from 6pm to 8pm

| Frieze generation artist Anya Gallacio is best known for creating un-natural happenings which can involve anything from pouring a ton of molten lead onto a warehouse floor, to the slow erosion of a vast block of ice by rock salt. This Wednesday evening it will be well worth experiencing the passing of time in her company, when she will be in conversation with Tim Marlow to discuss her newly-opened site-specific project at Tate Britain, which forms this year's Duveen Galleries Sculpture Commission. Gallacio has responded to the Tate's Collection and the South Duveen Gallery's impressive scale by filling it with whole oak tree trunks, creating a natural alternative to its architectural columns. To keep the North Duveen Gallery sweet, she has preserved its floor in a semi-transparent carpet of dried molten sugar solution. | |

| There are two Iain Banks; the one here, reading his new book Dead Air, and the science fiction version, Iain M. Banks. If you want to know why he has this fluctuating M, or just want to listen to one of our best and most bizarre, inventive writers read from his new novel, then catch this reading. In 1984 Banks exploded on to the British book market with his debut The Wasp Factory and has continued to terrify and enthrall his readers with subsequent books. Dead Air has been described as a literary event, and hearing him read from it will be an experience. After all, would'nt you like to meet the man whose mind can create such horrible, yet fantastic, worlds? | |

CONCERT
| AMAZING PILOTS, WOODCHUCK... | | Thursday 19 September | | @ The Arts Cafe, 28 Commercial St., E1 (020.7247.5681) Tube: Aldgate East |
| | Price: £5 door |
| Links: Track and Field | Amazing Pilots Interview |
| Amazing Pilots
, Woodchuck and Four Storey... time to hit the accelerator, get into that West Coast frame of mind and start feelin' groovy. These three bands prove you don't have to be a yank to appreciate the power of some warm chords and a crackling vocal singing some heartbreaking lyrics. The Amazing Pilots (Northern Ireland) Woodchuck (Glasgow) and Four Storeys (Oxford) nick bits of Classic American songwriting (Springsteen,Wilson, Bacharach) and produce something which is naggingly familiar yet uniquely theirs. Commitment to the high culture of the red, white and blue by headliners The Amazing Pilots is clear when you realise their recent itinerary included helping score the music to a film based on Douglas Coupland's Life After God and contributing to a Lee Hazlewood tribute album. This immersion in classic Americana is displayed in their music -- think Big Star meeting Philly Soul in a claustrophobia inducing lift. So if you fear you've left your heart in San Francisco make sure you make it down to The Arts Cafe; you might just find it there.

Bob Flanagan
died at age 43 in 1996. He had cystic fibrosis, his life was a painful one, and when first diagnosed he was told that he'd not live beyond his teens. Hence, he took to masturbating 'cause holding his penis seemed to make the pain go away. Not only was he a survivor but he made comedy (a member of the groundlings), poetry and most importantly, was a performance artist. After Chris Burden and before Ron Athey, Flanagan was THE supermasochist! Sick includes intimate footage shot by his wife, dominatrix and collaborator Sheree Rose. This films literally documents the tortured life turned into art. Also showing but very different is A Life Lived, a film about the tortured internal life of poetic painter Philip Guston. After all -- according to a New Yorker cartoon -- there are only two certainties, death and dinner...
NB:This evening is part of the film nights that run in conjuction with Bloomberg SPACE's The Mind Is A Horse film and video exhibition. (show ends Sunday 06.10)

TALK
| JOHNATHAN GLOVER & PETER SINGER | | Thursday 19 September (6:45pm) | | @ ICA, The Mall, SW1 (020.7930.3647) Tube: Charing Cross/Piccadilly |

| One week after the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States, two esteemed philosophers from opposite sides of the Atlantic (Jonathan Glover, King's College London & Peter Singer, Princeton) come together to discuss how national security and personal liberty interplay and sometimes conflict in a democratic society. These kinds of issues -- and a talk no less led by moral philosophy professors -- might have once seemed somewhat esoteric for the average punter. But the events of one year ago, and how governments have
mobilised to keep them from happening again, have suddenly brought a sense of immediacy and urgency to the table for all of us where questions of
ethics are concerned. Could academic philosophy finally have found a relevance to everyday life? Go if you can, if not then just think.

Uglyfunkers Edit, Cut Out, Mark Hawkins and Jermone Hill will be on in 01, where they're joined by headliners Crystal Distortion (network 23) and Michael Forshaw (chan 'n' mikes) both playing live. Nobody can be bothered glamming up for corporate clubbing any more, so the Rephlex Records hosted warehouse party on Brick Lane with DJ Manmaster and D'Arcangelo
headlining is sure to be very popular. DJ Manmaster (aka Richard D. James) plays a mixed-up set of jungle and techno alongside luscious soundscapes and sweeping melodies. You're sure to hear some cuts from the soon to be
released Broken Toys' Corner by D'Arcangelo (out on Rephlex, September 30) as he plays a rare live set of hip-hop and beats interspersed with swooping synths creating moments of true beauty. There's support from DJ Lory D (SNS) who's flying in from Rome to play an acid techno set, DJ Scud of Ambush Records, and DJ K-Rock -- a Rephlex Assault Systems member and Aphex Twin dancer. Finland's Astrobotnia (laptop set) play's his first ever London gig, DJ PP Roy serves up some dancefloor scorchers and there's a very "special guest" to be confirmed.

The man responsible for a truly inspired cover version of The Smith's There's A Light That Never Goes Out, Schneider TM, presents his unique blend of psychedelic lyrics, vocal melodies and rich electronic bliss. Also in attendance: Max Tundra, another outright musical mastermind with more multi-coloured, pop-inspired, vocal-drenched compositions and that's not all, Cursor Miner, described as "Electro Syd Barrett meets Aphex Twin meets Gary Numan", will be on hand to assist in creating a distinctly abnormal, misshapen but beautiful evening of electronic pop.

| A catwalk in a museum is a surreal vision for sure. Nevertheless, why not make like Vogue's ice-cool Anna Wintour and don your hugest, blackest, chicest shades for this one? Don't let them leave your face even if you can't see a thing -- this is fashion. You may be there to spot the next big thing, but the most important thing is to do it with attitude. This is the first public showing of the Central St. Martins fashion graduates' womenswear collections; the creme de la creme of the new generation. Influences range from the chaos of Alice in Wonderland to a dramatic new take on Muslim dress. Matthew Williamson will present this year's best womenswear award to Adrian Appiolaza, who will present his gaucho inspired jersey dress. | |

| With global conflict rearing its foul-featured face a-plenty recently, it's nice to see that not all have their minds on war-mongering. Especially, that is, with the high-profile folk bolstering the Peace One Day event being celebrated through music, multimedia and speech at Brixton Academy on Saturday. Video messages from Kofi Annan, Michael Stipe and Damon Albarn are accompanied by live sets from some credible (and aptly-named) acts: 1 Giant Leap, Neneh Cherry, Faithless, Jambience, Rhianna, Starsailor, UNKLE
and Zero 7. Documentary maker Jeremy Gilley's brainchild, the Peace One Day event marks the UN's International Day of Peace -- a request for everyone on the planet to avoid conflict for just one day. One may ask "Well ... if we can stop fighting for one day ..."

| For almost four decades this once relatively unknown singer/songwriter has benn tiptoeing 'round the mainstream, but since his rediscovery in the late 90's, his talent for blending warm, emotional vocals with blues, soul, folk and jazz has been widely recognised. Humble, unsung Chicago genius, Terry Callier live is a performance of such warmth and intimacy that it cannot help but reach out to the audience. From mid-tempo ballads to deep soul and danceable grooves, this is a concert not to be missed. It's simply, spiritual music that defies simple genre categorization from a deeply emotive and gifted artist.

What can one say? Jean-Luc Godard is considered a master of cinema, and this is your chance to take in a double bill at the Curzon Soho. Featured: Bande a Part (Band of The Outsiders), a fairly standard crime movie -- which Quentin Tarantino so worships that he named his film company "abandapart" -- and Le Mepris (Contempt), an intimate look at the breakdown of the art film industry in Europe. Godard brings out the best in his actors, cinematographers and the script. He is ultimately poetic, complex and ponderous in his work -- his work will always be influential.

Susan Sontag is one of those people whose fame is elusive: you can never remember what she's famous for. This is simply because her engagements, talents, and opinions bridge over such a vast array of areas: she is a human rights activist, a respected and loved author on a mountain of different subjects, as well as a writer and director of films. This Monday, she'll be giving the St. Jerome Lecture -- a lecture dedicated to the British Centre For Literary Translation -- at the Royal Festival Hall, and it'll centre on the relationship of translation to nationalism and the future of non-English classics of literature. Will anybody be reading Tolstoy or Hugo with the increasing power of the English language? Find out with Susan Sontag.
NB: For a slightly different type of evening... four days before (on Tursday 19.09) catch famed British enfant terrible Irvine Welsh at the Royal Festival Hall and listen to him read from his latest book Porno

| Links: Institut Francais | Plein Soleil | Reviews |
As part of this celebration of film noir, here is your chance to see the first version of Patricia Highsmith's
The Talented Mr. Ripley on the big screen. The riveting cinematography along with the use of mise-en-scene is masterfully utilized to accentuate the finesse of the story and its characters. It stars Alain "Samurai" Delon, and surely he is more effective than young Damon at embodying the moral-ambiguity of Highsmith's anti-hero. In addition, the beautiful Mediterranean scenery is captivating. Plein Soleil (Purple Noon) is European film noir at its best and not to be missed, unmissble.
NB: This film is part of the ongoing film noir festival at Cine Lumiere. A selection of films will be shown every Monday night till October 28th -- Touch of Evil, Vanishing...

| Just in town? Take part in the London artscene once a year? Better yet, you're a regular... well check out the Galleries Show (from team Rosenthal/Wigram -- they brought us Apocalypse). We all know it's in the commercial galleries where curators source for new talent, not in the studios. This is a great slice of a certain London artlife. It offers plenty, from Cai Guo-Quiag's video-recording of his fireworks performance, to Elizabeth Peytons little candy-coated gestures (check out the superlush Tony) and the little space constructed for drawing collaborations by Yoshitomo Nara and David Shrigley. The eddy in this post-Sensationalist storm is of course AK Dolven's (Anthony Wilkinson Gallery) video hidden in a little back room: the back of a bald, naked woman sits next to a handbag. We wait, it's a beautiful day, light reflects on the water, we still wait... | |

| JULIE MEHRETU | | Ends Saturday 28 September (Tue to Sat 10am - 6pm) | | @ White Cube, 44 Duke St., SW1 (020.7930.5373) Tube: Green Park |
| | Price: FREE |
| Links: White Cube | Interview | Images |
Ethiopian born Julie Mehretus' extraordinary paintings are like stills from a film of exploding architecture: think of Antonionis' wonderously photographed Zabriski Point. The images are sourced from architectural detail, building plans, and city maps, incorporatng abstract detail along the way. Typically, the radiating layers of Renagade Delirium (2002), contain multiple perspectives and changes of scale, characterised by frenetic mark making, at turns delicate or bold: Mehretus has described them as "story maps of no location". These paintings map the energy of the contemporary city in full flow, with the long traditional use of pencils and paint. Included in international exhibitions: Stedelijk Museum Voor Actuele Kunst Gent, the Musee D'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and she will have a solo show at the Walker Art Centre in 2003.
NB: Make sure you see this show -- it ends Saturday 28.10 -- as it will the last exhibition shown in this important and historical space that opened in 1993 (look out for White Cube's new space across the street in Mason's Yard).

| | Price: FREE |

It is by no coincidence that an exhibition which so well demonstrates the art of collecting art is on show at The V&A's Canon Photogaphy Gallery. In 1996, artist and collector James Moores invited Bruce Bernard, one of the most significant and talented picture editors of the 20th century, to create a Collection of 100 photographs. Spanning over one hundred years, the Collection includes work by William Henry Fox Talbot, Diane Arbus and Eve Arnold. Images cover a spectrum of subject-matter, countries, cultures and stylistic intent, all inextricably linked through a fleeting yet intense sensitivity, forming an exhibition where history, craft and pure artistry are merged with perfection. A selection of Bernard's own photographs taken in the studios of artists such as Lucian Freud, provide fascinating insight into his own perspective on the world. In one, Leigh Bowery's towering form stands behind Freud's anguished reflection of it, and in another, a painted, naked Freud seems about to step outside the canvas, whilst two legs of a headless nude tries to escape from one piled behind it.
NB: Make sure that when you go to see this show also check out Stepping In And Out also showing at the Cannon Photography Gallery.

BOOK REVIEW
Food by Design offers an intriguing take in the exploration of
the intricate relationship between food, architecture and design. Jump and Antonio
Gardoni has put together an architectural recipe book where he has
interrogated renowned architectural firms such as Alsop and Future Systems
as well as industrial designers such as Ron Arad and Marc Newson to reveal their favorite recipes... The
book uniquely illustrates the coexistence between food and architecture
in the way that cooking and designing share similar notions of
functionality and hedonism. Both require good design, good ingredients
and above all, they must be pleasurable and satisfy the senses. Enjoy
this feast of shapes, colors and textures! (Also included in the book
are bio pages on all architects and designers involved -- a definite
who's who's list of the players in both overlapping fields: Dixon, Droog, Pawson, Starck.)
Giveaway: We have one copy of Food By Design to
give away. It'll go to one randomly picked winner who can tell us who
designed the Lockheed Lounge chair.
