As the "
chillwave" buzz gets into full swing on this side of the Atlantic, the likes of
Neon Indian,
Beach House,
Washed Out and other dreamy downtempo acts are more than likely to find themselves edging into summer line-ups. Those three, at least, are more than worthy of that -- though no doubt there will be a thousand exported pastiches for us to feast on. It's easy to see why sun-blushed West Coasters are more prone to slowing the pace and washing their melodies in psychedelic, laid-back synths than chilly northern hemisphere urbanites. Nonetheless if the signs of scene-ism among these names are already putting you off,
Memory Tapes (aka
Dayve Hawk) offers a more sampled,
Balearic edge to proceedings. As a producer he's curiously enough
turned his
hand to a
Britney Spears track, and has been known to consort with the
Mad Decent folks. So if anything it's pure coincidence that
MT finds its name as part of any scene, being something of a misshapen but very accomplished production operation. At
MT's recent first
London gig at the Social, the lush soundscapes and cosmic nods found themselves translated into a live drums, guitar, vocals and laptop setup -- evidence "chillwave" can be much more engaging than the coffee table background beats the name conjures.
