Ruairiadh O'Connell's current solo exhibition entitled
Six Play presents six paintings by the artist housed in a cosy intimate space at BISCHOFF/WEISS. Each painting follows a similar sequence, whereby the artist has marked large scale aluminium canvasses with silkscreen impressions of women's legs in black silk stockings. Near the top of each painting, O'Connell has deliberately included a single screw bolted through the work -- a suggestively perverse gesture alluding to the sexual connotations of
women's hosiery. The varying positioning of the silk stocking imprint captures an ephemeral moment of history. It's like viewing a fossilised foot imprint of a prehistoric animal -- you can't help but be curious about what was happening during the specific moment it was recorded.
O'Connell enhances this imagery by isolating and expanding portions of the imprint, so that it takes a moment to figure out you're actually looking at a part of human anatomy covered by sexy silk stockings. The amalgamation of crisp smooth surfaces with the textured women's stockings results in a stunning abstract image.
