Indie pop prefect
Gruff Rhys (
Super Furry Animals,
Neon Neon) embarks on a psychedelic, sci-fi trip across space and time to trace his long lost
Patagonian relatives. As a child
Rhys was inspired by the Welsh- singing, Spanish-guitar-playing
Rene Griffiths -- whom he was told was a distant relative, from a part of his family that had
emigrated from
Wales to Patagonia in a popular move during the mid 19th Century. The documentary follows a tour of impromptu gigs in theatres, teahouses and nightclubs in Argentina, Chile and Brazil, designed to uncover the whereabouts of the elusive Griffiths. Rhys'
Tardis-type travels in his trademark red
Power Rangers helmet also lead to a re-living of the original Welsh colonial journey, and allow digressions into current issues in the areas he passes through along the way. The film is as dazzling as it is disorientating -- kitsch and sentimental in some ways, but more broadly it marks the survival of a culture through the generations.
NB: Gruff Rhys and Tony da Gatorra will perform a number of songs after the BFI screening. If you cannot make this screening then catch Rhys the following night at the Curzon Soho for a Q&A. Separado! is released in London on 30/07.
