Michael Landy has constructed a giant perspex container, or
Art Bin, for his new show, where anyone can fill out a form and offer their work up for disposal.
Landy acts as judge, jury and executioner to the creative failures of those artists who have entered. The exhibition gives equal visibility to the apparent free-for-all content deemed worthy of chucking away, displayed in the 600 metres cubed container in the gallery, and to the selection process for the work, visually reflected on the gallery floor in the three man strong panel of
Landy and his team. This is not just a public exercise in the relative value of taste but a public airing of the drive behind the contemporary art market and the galleries, dealers and artists that steer it. From
the man who famously
destroyed everything he
owned, Landy's success as an artist lies in the
scale of his ambition. The "exaggerated gesture" that lies at the heart of his work applies the same prosaic eye to his subjects. Whether it be consumerism or the art market, nothing escapes derision.
NB: runs till 14/03.
